Perspective
November 4 (13 Aban): A Nation’s Narrative of Resilience and the Sacred Mission of Safeguarding Human DignityA Statement Condemning Aggression, Crimes Against Humanity, and Violations of the Right to LifePublic Relations and International Affairs DepartmentAcademy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of IranNovember 4 (13 Aban) holds a profound place in the historical memory of the Iranian nation. It is not merely a reminder of a particular event, but a symbol of a people’s determination to uphold their independence and national dignity rather than submit to domination and foreign dependence. The seizure of the US Embassy in 1979, in the context of Iran’s contemporary history, represented an expression of the demand for independence, the rejection of foreign intervention, and the preservation of a nation’s right to self-determination.Today, amid the tragic developments and renewed military aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iranian territory, revisiting the significance of November 4 is both a historical necessity and a national and humanitarian responsibility. What Iran is experiencing today is not merely a military confrontation between states; it concerns human security, the sanctity of life, the right to life, and the protection of a society’s vital infrastructure. From the standpoint of scientific knowledge, medical ethics, and its profound humanitarian responsibilities, the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally condemns any attack on the lives of innocent people and civilian infrastructure. No political interest or strategic justification can legitimize the killing of defenseless human beings, particularly women, children, older persons, and patients.Hospitals, schools, medical centers, laboratories, and research institutions are not battlefields; they are sanctuaries of life, knowledge, and hope for humanity’s future.Attacks on these institutions extend far beyond the destruction of buildings and equipment; they constitute an assault on the foundations of public health and an infringement upon the fundamental human right to live with dignity. From the perspective of medical ethics, every human life, irrespective of nationality, race, religion, or political affiliation, possesses inviolable dignity. Safeguarding that dignity is a universal human responsibility. The conscience of the global medical community cannot remain silent in the face of grieving mothers, orphaned children, wounded civilians, and patients deprived of essential medical care.History has demonstrated that even after the guns fall silent, war continues to afflict generations through disease, disability, psychological trauma, environmental contamination, and social disintegration. The destruction of pharmaceutical, medical, healthcare, and scientific infrastructure threatens both the present and future health of a nation, with consequences extending far beyond the battlefield.Accordingly, attacks on vital civilian facilities, where the relevant legal elements are established, may constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and warrant international investigation, accountability, and prosecution.Emphasizing the imperative of upholding the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution in armed conflict, the Academy of Medical Sciences calls for the unconditional protection of civilians and medical facilities. We firmly believe that comprehensive sanctions and coercive measures that disrupt patients’ access to medicines, medical equipment, and essential healthcare services must also undergo serious reconsideration in light of their humanitarian and public health consequences.Any policy that turns the suffering of patients into an instrument of political pressure, or treats the deaths of innocent people as an acceptable cost of achieving political objectives, stands in stark contradiction to the fundamental principles of ethics and humanity.
The United States, as a nation wielding considerable power and bearing international responsibilities, cannot evade accountability or legal responsibility for the humanitarian consequences of its military actions.Likewise, the Israeli regime must be held accountable for violations of the fundamental rights of nations and for any actions that contravene peremptory norms of international law and international humanitarian law.We call upon the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and independent human rights organizations to fulfill their historic responsibilities by pursuing fact-finding, documenting violations and atrocities, supporting victims, and taking effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.Independent and impartial investigations into attacks against civilians, educational and medical institutions, and healthcare infrastructure are indispensable to the pursuit of justice and to preventing impunity for those responsible for violations of international law.We reaffirm our conviction that lasting security cannot be achieved through threats, intimidation, or military superiority. It can only be secured through mutual respect, justice, dialogue, and adherence to the rights of nations.Drawing upon its rich civilizational heritage, scientific capabilities, and collective national resolve, the Iranian nation has the inherent right to pursue progress and prosperity in an environment free from threats and aggression. In these difficult days, the medical community of Iran, remaining faithful to its professional oath and humanitarian commitments, stands alongside the people. Safeguarding their lives, health, and dignity is regarded as a duty that transcends all political considerations. We believe that the mission of medical science extends beyond healing physical wounds. Defending human dignity, alleviating suffering, and kindling the light of hope in the darkest moments of history are equally integral to this noble calling.November 4 reminds us that independence acquires its true meaning when accompanied by justice, dignity, awareness, and respect for human dignity. The Academy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran, while unequivocally condemning military aggression and actions that violate fundamental human rights, calls for an immediate cessation of attacks against civilians, the protection of healthcare facilities, accountability for those responsible for atrocities, and the establishment of a just and lasting peace.May the world of tomorrow resound not with explosions and the anguish of grieving mothers, but with the voices of science, healing, life, and peaceful coexistence; for the highest triumph of civilization lies not in conquering humanity, but in safeguarding it.Supporting References for Publication:To strengthen the scientific and legal foundations of this statement, reference may be made to Amnesty International’s 2026 reports concerning attacks on residential areas in Tehran and its calls for independent investigations, as well as communications by United Nations experts regarding damage to educational, medical, and healthcare facilities in Iran.Public Relations and International Affairs DepartmentAcademy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran
