October 17: A Day of Mourning and a Call to Awaken Humanity’s Conscience in the Face of the Genocide of Palestinian Women and Children
Issued by the Academy of Medical Sciences
October 17 is a day to pause before the unending suffering of an oppressed people and to reflect deeply on the conscience of a world that has fallen silent.
It is a day when the names of Palestinian women and children are etched into the pages of history, accompanied by profound and unbearable sorrow.
In the land of olive trees and sunshine, children awaken not to dreams of tomorrow, but to the terror of explosions and the anguish of displacement.
Mothers, instead of singing lullabies of comfort and peace, search desperately for shelter to protect the lives of their children.
Homes are reduced to rubble, hospitals are overwhelmed by suffering, and hope struggles to breathe beneath the dust of destruction.
This catastrophe is not merely a tragedy for Palestine; it is a deep wound inflicted upon the conscience of humanity and the moral integrity of the world.
No cause, no justification, and no pretext can excuse the killing of defenseless human beings, especially innocent children and vulnerable women.
Human life, regardless of race, nationality, religion, or geographical boundaries, possesses an inviolable dignity that must never be violated.
From the perspective of medical science, safeguarding human life is not merely a professional duty; it is a profound moral and humanitarian calling.
For this very reason, remaining silent in the face of victims’ suffering and denying them access to emergency relief and medical care are fundamentally incompatible with the spirit of medicine.
Drawing upon its scientific commitment and ethical responsibility, the Academy of Medical Sciences condemns this horrific crime.
We reaffirm the urgent need to protect civilians, particularly women and children, and to uphold the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.
Unhindered and safe access to medicine, clean drinking water, food, and healthcare is a basic human right and an immediate necessity.
The international community must move beyond ineffectual statements and take meaningful action to stop the killing and bring this harrowing suffering to an end.
Scientific, academic, and medical institutions, too, have a responsibility not to remain silent in the face of the erosion of moral values and the normalization of violence.
History will judge not only those who commit atrocities, but also those who stand by in silence as human beings suffer.
We believe that no wall stands taller than the collective will of peoples determined to uphold human dignity.
No child should ever become a victim of war, and no mother should ever have to cry out to the world while searching for the body of her child.
May justice take the place of vengeance, humanity prevail over violence, and lasting peace rise from the ruins of war.
October 17 serves as a timeless reminder that defending the lives of Palestinian women and children is, ultimately, a defense of human dignity and the future of all humanity.
